THE CULTURAL WORLD OF THE OLD TESTAMENT
October 20, 27, November 3, 10, 17, 24, December 1, 2009
Tuesdays, 7-9pm
The world of the Old Testament is essentially alien to even the most avid casual readers of the Bible.  So often, prejudices, assumptions and images generated by various media govern our reading of the Jewish Scriptures.  Anyone who has read the Book of Exodus and then seen the famous movie "The Ten Commandments" can easily agree!  Using the text, Introducing the Cultural Context of the Old Testament  by John Pilch, Ph.D., we will try to learn and to experience some of the cultural traditions and customs that were part of the society of the Old Testament.  The World of the Old Testament course is an invitation to learn more about the Mediterranean culture of our ancestors in the faith in order to understand the Bible.  Using the proposed test as a guide, adults will concentrate on the Wisdom liturature and be guided through cross-cultural interpretation contrasting middle-class United States cultural values with those of the ancient and current Mediterranean world.  Required text:  New American Bible (NAB), New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) or New Jerusalem Bible (NJB).  Suggested text:  Introducing the Cultural Context of the Old Testament by John Pilch, Ph.D., $20.80.  ISBN1-55635-185-2, Wipf and Stock, Publishers, Eugene, OR, (541) 344-1528/Fax (541) 344-1506.  kttp://wipfand stock.com

Finding the STABLE in the Community
What is God's message to this community today?  Where are the stables?  We prepare our worship spaces and our homes -clean them, decorate them with lights, trees, angels, and a creche.  We may prepare ourselves by going to confession.  And yet, Jesus is born not in the parlors of our lives, but out in the stable, and that's where we have to look for him.  Where is the stable in the life of our communities?  Where are the dark places, the struggles?  Where can we transform the darkness into light.

JANUARY 2010

THE CULTURAL WORLD OF THE NEW TESTAMENT
January 26, February 2, 9, 16, 23, March 2, 9, 16, 2010
Tuesdays from 7 to 9pm
This series on the New Testament is a continuation of the fall series.  We will explore the world view of self-understanding of the New Testament authors and community.  Through various exercises and discussions, we will attempt to depart from the 21st century and enter into the world of our lst century AD ancestors, so to see our faith from a new context.  Such a perspective will then allow us to re-inform our reading of the Biblical text with an enriched appreciation of the narrative, setting, and assumptions presumed by the original inspired authors and communities.  Class use: New American (NAB) or New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)  Suggested text: Introducing the Cultural Context of the New Testament by John Pilch, Ph.D.
Presenter:  Rev. Albert Tremblay, Obl.SB, Pastor of St. Joseph Parish, Belmont
Location: Sacred Heart Parish Hall Bldg., Laconia
